Our Most Recent Trip to El Salvador
In March 2011, three folks from First Presbyterian, 10 Stanford students and six others went on the South Bay Sanctuary Covenant delegation to El Salvador.
We went to be in solidarity with poor and oppressed people in El Salvador. We listened and reflected on the words and experiences of quite a few people working on different aspects of civil society. And we heard about liberation theology, human rights and social justice.
Then we took a bus to Comunidad Octavio Ortiz—our partner community, stayed with host families, and celebrated and worshiped with them. We learned about their current situation.
It was an experience full of examples of God’s liberating spirit, and God’s abundant love.

El Salvador Delegation with Geoff, Drew, Arlene & Mural of Archbishop Romero.

Nancy, who came on our delegation, was deeply moved when she remembered her parents’ experiences in El Salvador and why they fled to the US. A special highlight for Nancy and all of us was participating in a memorial procession and mass, which commemorated Archbishop Romero on the 31st anniversary of his assassination.

Mauricio, inspiring President of our Partner Community, was a leader in a refugee camp to which some of the founding members fled during the civil war. Mauricio was the first president of our partner community while things were still in chaos. During this time, according to several sources, he was a pillar of strength and a powerful leader. His life story and his current leadership are both testaments to God’s liberating justice living through him.
