Lord’s Gym Warming Shelter in East Palo Alto

During the first several weeks of 2011, First Pres folks collected sleeping bags, towels, clothing, blankets, toiletries and new cots in support of the Lord’s Gym Warming Shelter in East Palo Alto, a two-year-old temporary shelter for the 300+ homeless currently living in East Palo Alto.

And on Sunday, January 16th, we celebrated our third F.L.O.W. Sunday (standing for Faith Lived Out in the World).  We worshipped with the Rev. Paul Bains’ congregation at St. Samuel Church of God in Christ (East Palo Alto) for Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday and presented the donated items for the Warming Center which is overseen by St. Samuel.

The Warming Shelter’s doors were opened in 2009, meeting the needs of the most disadvantaged members of the East Palo Alto community.  The shelter offers food, clothing, overnight shelter, dental care, health services, and transportation.  Open from November 1st through April 15th, the shelter houses approximately 25 to 30 people each night.
