Our Work in the World


We are a community of faith that comes together to worship God and to do God’s work in the world.

We believe that both these aspects of our faith life are important.

Here’s a sampling of the work in the world that emanated from our community of faith in 2010.

 

We..

    • Served a total of 4,542 meals to those in need through our Wednesday night meal program.
    • Provided shelter / dinner / breakfast for 12-15 homeless adults during the month of July via Hotel de Zink ($15,000 in-kind donation).
    • Provided $15,000 to general missions of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
    • Hosted theologian Larry Rasmussen as the 2011 Robert McAfee Brown Lecturer.
    • Co-sponsored a day-long conference on Israeli / Palestinian conflict
    • Provided 35 cots, plus toiletries and food for the East Palo Alto Warming Shelter.
    • Served as the “seed-bed” for the children’s book Operation Marriage.
    • Provided 25 care packages and bus tokens for East Palo Alto Women coming out of prison.
    • Guided 13 youth through the Confirmation process.
    • Provided below-cost rental opportunities on our campus to the following non-profits:

      • Contributed to four Denominational Offerings—The Christmas Joy Offering, Peacemaking Offering, One Great Hour of Sharing Offering, and the Pentecost Offering.
      • Participated in the CROP Walk.
      • Helped to pass an amendment to remove barriers to the ordination of LGBT persons in our Presbytery and at the National Denominational level.
      • Held a Cool Planet Earth Day service and celebrated our recognition as an Earth Care Congregation from the Environmental Ministries of the Presbyterian Church USA.
      • Supported and celebrated the opening of the permanent “Day Worker Center” in Mountain View.
      • Organized a week-long Youth Mission Trip to the Center for Student Missions in Oakland, California.
      • Offered monthly Prime-Timers gatherings for seniors, and financially supported the Senior Chat Program.
      • Gave $4,700 to support United Campus Ministry at Stanford University.
      • Provided approximately 1,100 hours of pastoral care and 300 hours of hospital visitation.
      • Offered care and support to congregational members through the Deacon Neighborhood System.
      • Hosted and supported a Social Justice Fair.
      • Offered 160 hours of Adult Education classes.
      • Participated in two F.L.O.W. (Faith Lived Out in the World) Sundays: Worshipped and worked with St. Samuel’s Church in East Palo Alto for Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend; and worshipped with–and helped renovate–the Bread of Life Church in East Palo Alto.
      • Supported 15 families with Christmas gifts and food via our “Christmas for Others” program.
      • Offered 17 Small Activities Groups, including: Base Christian Community, Faith Issues in Film, Men’s Support Group, Parenting Kids & Pre-Teens, Cool Planet Working Group, InnVision Meals, SACRED Meals, Adult Choir, Prayer Group, Healing Group, Just Faith, Engaging Spirituality, First Pres. Hikers, Prime Timers, MicahsCall, and More Light Team.
      • Provided 1,749 pounds of food to feed the hungry and homeless through the Palo Alto Food Closet.
